Stranger and me (Daniel in Prague)

2021

Performative installation

This project started during the Covid-19 pandemic when my friend Daniel (referred to as Human Daniel in this project) got stuck in Mexico and was unable to come back to Prague because of closed borders and other administrative problems. The idea came to make a human-scale puppet of Human Daniel, at first just for the fun of it. But when I first took him out on the street, the puppet triggered different reactions that I wasn’t expecting among citizens. This situation pushed me to start research about uncanniness and social relationships, putting Puppet Daniel at the center of it, in public spaces.

The installation is a presentation of this research. It exhibits different media documenting the journey and features both Human Daniel and Puppet Daniel, interacting with each other. While Puppet Daniel is becoming more human-like, Human Daniel is slowly turning into a puppet.
